# Text to Speech: How to Read Text Aloud with Your Browser

Reading long documents, articles, or code comments strains your eyes after a few hours. Text-to-speech (TTS) lets you listen instead — and your browser already has everything you need built in. FreeToolJet's Text to Speech tool converts any text into spoken audio using the Web Speech API, with no app to install and no API key to configure.

What Is Text to Speech?

Text-to-speech is a technology that converts written text into spoken audio. Modern browsers ship with a speech synthesis engine that supports dozens of languages and voices. The Web Speech API, available in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, gives web pages direct access to this engine.

Unlike cloud TTS services that charge per character, browser-based TTS is completely free and works offline for most default voices.

How to Use the Text to Speech Tool

  1. Paste or type the text you want to hear in the input area.
  2. Select a voice from the dropdown — voices depend on your operating system.
  3. Adjust speed (0.5x to 2x) and pitch to your preference.
  4. Press Play to start. Use Pause, Resume, or Stop to control playback.

When to Use Text to Speech

  • Proofreading: Hearing your writing catches errors your eyes skip over.
  • Accessibility: Listen to content instead of reading if you have visual fatigue.
  • Multitasking: Listen to documentation or articles while doing other work.
  • Language learning: Hear pronunciation of foreign words and phrases.

Tips for Better Results

  • Most devices have both standard and "enhanced" voices. Enhanced voices sound more natural but may require an internet connection.
  • Slow down the speed (0.7x-0.8x) for dense technical content. Speed up (1.5x-2x) for casual reading.
  • If a voice is not available, check your operating system's language and speech settings — you may need to download additional voice packs.
